On 26th October, 1947, Hindu Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir valley declared accession of his Muslim majority state to India, thereby inviting Indian Government for military intervention. The Indian Army units lead by Col. Sam Manekshaw (Later Chief of Army Staff & Field Marshal) pre empted to start landing in the Kashmir valley through massive air lift and air support sorties rendered by the Indian Air Force at 9.30 am on 27th October 1947.The Indian Air Force s' Dakota DC-3s along 100 Dakotas from Air Lines successfully undertook the uphill task under the command of Air Commodore Baba Mehar Singh.
The RPAF was severely handicapped, with only 16 Tempests fighter bomber aircraft on its inventory against the IAF s' 68. Furthermore, The Government of Pakistan had prohibited its battle employment in order to avoid a full scale air war with India.
Whereas, IAF s' Tempests fighter aircraft enjoyed complete freedom of action to carry out hit and run air raids against mujahideen lashkars operating around Srinagar and valley.
However, the Air Force could venture to respond to the SOS calls for supplies from the besieged people of Gilgi & Skardu and from the Azad Kashmir forces fighting against Indian Army & Air Force. The young RPAF was tasked to undertake air supply drops in the valley, One of two Dakotas DC-3, with a set of aircrew and a ground party , was immediately deployed at Risalpur, where it was to operate under the command of Wing Commander M. Asghar Khan( Later first Pakistani C-in-C of the Air Force & Air Marshal).
